When people drive down a newly completed roadway, walk through a neighborhood park, or turn on the tap in their home, they rarely think about the thousands of details that went into designing those projects. Long before construction begins, CAD technicians work behind the scenes to transform engineering concepts into the detailed plans contractors rely on every day.
In recognition of National CAD Day on August 2, we’re highlighting the important role CAD technicians play at Sunrise Engineering through the experiences of Stephanie Fuller, Senior CAD Technician.
Every Project Starts with a Plan
The journey from an idea to a completed project begins with information.
According to Stephanie, the first CAD drawings typically come from the survey team, which collects the field data that serves as the foundation for the project. Once that information is complete, engineers and designers begin developing the project’s design.
As the design progresses, CAD technicians assemble those individual drawings into a complete set of construction plans. Before those plans are issued, they go through a thorough quality assurance and quality control process to ensure accuracy and completeness. The plans are then submitted to the client or reviewing agency, where revisions are often requested before final approval is received.
“The process continues until all the plans are approved,” Stephanie explained.
While that may sound straightforward, every revision and every detail helps ensure the finished project can be built safely, efficiently, and as intended.
Bringing Engineering Ideas to Life
CAD technicians become heavily involved once the design is complete and it’s time to transform engineering concepts into construction documents.
Their role is far more than simply preparing drawings.
During plan production, CAD technicians work closely with engineers and designers, asking questions, reviewing details, and identifying potential conflicts before construction begins. Those conversations often lead to improvements in the plans, helping reduce confusion in the field and ensuring contractors have the information they need to successfully build the project.
It’s a collaborative process that helps turn technical designs into clear, accurate construction documents.
A Day in the Life of a Senior CAD Technician
No two days are exactly alike for Stephanie.
As a Senior CAD Technician, she serves as a resource not only for other CAD technicians but also for engineers, designers, and project managers throughout the office. Questions range from troubleshooting software issues to helping prepare time-sensitive revisions and field directives needed during construction.
She also helps document Sunrise Engineering’s CAD processes and customize CAD tools to improve efficiency for teams across the company.
“I think I most enjoy the wide range of things that I get to do at work,” Stephanie said. “Most days are never the same. I look forward to coming into work every day.”
The Value of Attention to Detail
Success as a CAD technician requires both technical knowledge and careful attention to detail.
Stephanie believes two qualities stand out above all others: paying close attention to detail and retaining lessons learned from previous projects. Those skills help CAD technicians produce accurate plans while continually improving with every project they complete.
That attention to detail often pays dividends before construction even begins. By reviewing plans carefully and collaborating with engineers throughout the design process, CAD technicians can help identify conflicts or areas where additional information may be needed, saving valuable time during construction.
Seeing the Finished Product
Although much of a CAD technician’s work happens behind a computer screen, the results become part of the communities we live in.
For Stephanie, one of the most rewarding aspects of her job is seeing completed projects after construction is finished.
“Being able to drive by a completed project and know that I was a part of that,” she said.
