Utah Testing & Engineering: A Growing Force in Quality Assurance

Since its founding in 2011, Utah Testing & Engineering (UTE) has established itself as a leader in materials testing and special inspections across the Intermountain West. Originally working on projects primarily for Sunrise Engineering’s Building Department and the Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM), UTE has grown into a diversified, high-impact operation serving developers, contractors, and public infrastructure projects. With over 2,000 completed projects, UTE is continuing to expand its reach and influence.

Committed to Quality and Safety

At its core, UTE ensures that construction projects meet rigorous quality and safety standards. Through a combination of materials testing and special inspections, the team verifies the structural integrity of buildings and roads, helping prevent failures, hazards, and costly rework.

Special inspections focus on confirming compliance with structural plans and codes. UTE professionals inspect concrete reinforcement, masonry, post-tensioned concrete, structural steel welding and bolting, fireproofing, and more. Meanwhile, materials testing ensures that soils, concrete, and asphalt meet strict engineering and performance standards—from compaction and density tests to detailed chemical analyses.

By upholding these standards, UTE plays a critical role in public safety, ensuring roads remain durable and buildings stand strong for years to come.

A Culture of Excellence

UTE’s commitment to excellence is reinforced by its numerous industry certifications, including approvals from AASHTO, UDOT, ICC, ACI, AWS, and WAQTC. These credentials give clients, engineers, architects, contractors, and regulatory agencies confidence that every test and inspection is performed to the highest standard.

As Ryan Brown, Operations Manager, explains, “Certifications and calibrations assure our clients that our inspectors, technicians, and equipment meet ASTM requirements. This gives peace of mind not only to clients but also to regulatory bodies and engineers overseeing projects.”

Growth and Expansion

UTE has seen significant growth in both team expertise and geographic reach. Initially focused on projects in the Salt Lake Valley and Central Utah, the company has expanded into Wyoming, Nevada, and Idaho. As the company continues to grow, leadership is exploring the potential for new branches under the Utah Testing umbrella, such as Wyoming Testing and Idaho Testing.

“We’ve been growing at a fast pace,” Brown says. “With CEO Greg Potter’s vision, we’re looking to establish a stronger presence in key markets beyond Utah, creating new opportunities for our team and our clients.”

A Competitive Edge

What sets Utah Testing & Engineering apart from competitors in the Intermountain West? According to Brown, it comes down to responsiveness and attention to detail.

“I’ve heard from clients that some testing firms require two to three weeks’ notice before they can even start a job. We make it a priority to cover our clients’ work when they need it. Sometimes that puts us in a tough position, but we do whatever it takes to get to the project on time,” he says.

Additionally, UTE prides itself on delivering reports within one to two days, ensuring that project teams can make informed decisions quickly. “Some firms take weeks to deliver reports. We understand that our clients need results fast to keep projects on schedule.”

Looking to the Future

With a strong foundation and ambitious vision, Utah Testing & Engineering is poised for continued growth and expansion. Whether ensuring the integrity of a high-rise development, a roadway, or an industrial facility, UTE remains dedicated to precision, reliability, and top-tier service.

“Our journey from 1,000 to 2,000 projects in just two years speaks volumes about our momentum,” says Brown. “We’re excited for what’s ahead and ready to take Utah Testing to the next level.”

With a reputation built on quality, trust, and responsiveness, UTE continues to set the standard for testing and inspection services—one project at a time.
